Starting a Handyman Business
Are you good with tools and DIY? Do your friends and family always turn to you when they need something repaired around the house or at work? If so, why not turn your talent for being handy into a thriving business? Starting a handyman business can be a way to earn extra money, or even earn a living, depending on how seriously you take it and how much time you wish to devote to your new enterprise.
Your handyman business can simply be a small, one-man operation if you like. This is usually how most people start, then expand their business as time goes on. Post flyers everywhere you can, advertise in your local Yellow Pages and newspaper, hand out business cards, and try an advertising decal on your car or truck. You'll be surprised how these inexpensive forms of advertising bring in eager customers.
When designing advertisements for your handyman business, think of ways to get the attention of potential customers. Use clear, large type and try vibrant colors for your flyers. Make sure your company name and telephone number are legible and noticeable. When it comes to the text, simply describe what you do. Such as, 'Handyman for hire -- no job too large or small.' It's simple and to the point, which is what customers are looking for.
Good customer service is the number one way you can distinguish yourself from the competition. This means presenting a professional appearance and doing a good job in a timely matter. It's a good idea to get a separate phone line for business, and always answer it with a professional greeting. And when you collect payment for your services, present your customers with an invoice printed on your company letterhead as well as a few copies of your business card. This serves a few purposes -- it increases the professionalism and gives the customer a way to easily refer you to friends, family and co-workers that need a good handyman!
Eventually, when you build a solid clientele, you can expand your business. This could mean hiring employees, branching out into other areas, or even creating your own franchise. How far you take your business is up to you. With a little know-how and a lot of hard work, you can start and run a thriving handyman business!
