Starting a Computer Business

If you know a lot about and ideally have a passion for computers, then starting a computer business could be an option for you! There are various ways you can take your knowledge of computers and turn it into a thriving business.

One such way is providing repair and technical support for computer users. You can either travel to customers' homes and repair their computers onsite, or they can bring the machines to you. This can be a very lucrative business, as it's not uncommon for a computer repairperson to charge upwards of $50 per hour. You might find yourself getting rid of viruses or reformatting hard drives. There are a variety of problems computers can get, and frustrated users are often willing to pay whatever it takes to fix them.

Another option is providing computer setup and tutoring for brand new users. Often, people who purchase a computer need some help setting it up. They may also need instruction in the proper way to maintain and care for their computer. You could also school them in the basics of web surfing and teach them how to use various software programs. The rates for this service would be a little less than computer repair, however you can expect to make an hourly rate of at least $20 depending on your area.

When starting a computer business, it's important to take care of all licensing issues before advertising for customers. Once you file all the necessary paperwork and have your business license, you can start looking for clients. The first place most people look when seeking a computer repairperson is the Yellow Pages, so make sure you have an advertisement there. You can also advertise in the newspaper, on the radio, or on television. Place magnetic decals on your vehicle that announce your business, and hand out business cards everywhere you go!

A computer business can certainly make you a good living, if you practice professionalism and provide quality work to your customers as quickly as you can. People hate to wait for their computers, so if you can get the job done more quickly and cheaply than your competition, customers are more likely to choose you again and again when they have computer issues. And as any business owner can tell you, happy customers are the key to a successful business!
